View Full Version : The Love of Money

(For Auntie)

Who says there is no poetry in money?
Does not the lilting Lira sing a song?
Dollars are all rollicking good sports,
Or so I’m told, and Roubles
Rumble on and on and on.
The Yen is filled with longing
And it’s going for a song,
And Zlotys may be spikey
But yet still they're hanging on,
(Or would be if the Euro hadn’t
Upped and come along)
And Pounds have lots of rhythm
When repeated in a row;
Just the thing to keep beat
For poets in the know.

Don’t tell me there’s no poetry in money.
Money is the stuff that helps you grow.
It can put a roof above your head
And fix it when it leaks,
And it puts the food on tables
And the shoes upon your feet,
For although you have to earn it
And it makes of you a slave,
The acquisition of it
is rewarding, in its way.
Capital is capital,
Loot is lovely to behold
A stinking pile of cash
Can make one’s
Dearest dreams unfold.

The "earn it"/"of it" endings sounded nice together as well as "loot is lovely".

Is rewarding IN its way. Chirpy piece Hawk. You have common cents....

A poem this fun would make Auntie proud. Sure one doesn't find poetry in money just about anywhere. But in a Hawk post, even the haunted one is drawn to the, ahem, cent of money.

Fragrant as the breath from a dragon's den :D Thanks Haunt :)

Who says there is no poetry in money?

That would be Robert Graves.

Thanks for the shout-out, Hawk, but your poor old Auntie doesn't know from money, not even as a passing acquaintance.

I've heard that some folks are able to earn a handsome salary, but the puny paycheck I slaved for didn't even have a nice personality.

BTW, you know the line in The Great Gatsby where Daisy's voice is described as the "sound of money"? I never could figure out if Fitzgerald meant that she had a pinging voice, like the sound of coins hitting one another, or if he meant that she was one of those New England one percenters who always sounded as if they had lockjaw.

Hi Auntie, glad you enjoyed the ditty. Maybe Daisy sounded like Katy Hepburn in, well anything really :D Mind you, the sound of gold coins chinking is definitely a friendly one, an observation I have made before ;)

The sound of gold coins chinking must be very enticing though I've not had the good fortune to hear their symphony yet. I can only say that the jingle of sliver anklets is very alluring. ;) A capital poem dear Hawk.

Thank'ee mistress Ripley for paying this poem the compliment of your interest :) It seems to be providing dividends! The anklets sound charming, but I doubt if I could carry them off :D

Good to see you flitting through. Not writing much except essays at the moment, but if my piece for James Joyce Quarterly is accepted I'll write something in celebration. Till then,

VERY creative, i love that you chose the title you did. The whole saying is "the love of money is the root of all evil", and i think you took it and turned it on its head. Good writing

Leo shoulda won the oscar. There is most definitely poetry in money.

People dont want happyness or salvation, they just want money.

Good poem!

I don't have no love of money for you can't love what you don't know ;-) I have, on the other hand, a great love of poetry, and thus I just love your poem, Hawkie. You're really someone, Deutschmark my words! :-)

HC, JB & Dieter: thank you all for reading and for your penny-pinching (or in Dieter's case, pfennig flinging) puns :D delighted you all enjoyed it sufficiently to leave me a note, though not, unfortunately, one I can spend. Hi ho. Back to walking the streets then lol.
