When I was younger, I picked up a book that was my mother's . . . there was a story about a woman who had just returned from a funeral, and was speaking with a friend or relative. She confesses that her husband, who had just passed away, was a heavy drinker, and to combat this, she would put a drop of (opium? laudanum?) some drug in his coffee. The drinking stopped, so she stopped using the drug, and believed that he died from withdraw (?).
This book has disappeared, and my mother has since passed away; the inability to identify this story is driving me crazy! If you have any information and can assist, I would greatly appreciate it!
