Favorite short stories by British authors?

I'm teaching a high school British literature class and instead of teaching "Emma", I'm going to have the students do a unit on short stories. What are your favorites? I'm thinking of including: Araby by James Joyce, Rockinghorse Winner by DH Lawrence, The Demon Lover by Elizabeth Bowen, A Hanging by George Orwell. What else would you recommend?

J G Ballard The Garden of Time (pretty much any short story by Ballard actually - he's a master)

I also recommend Alasdair Gray, although it's years since I read him, and I don't have a book to hand.

Maybe a chapter out of Cider With Rosie by Laurie Lee. My favourite was the one about the murder.
