The price you pay
Is the price you pay.
The conductor winks beneath
His plastic peak.
He is probably a metaphor
But his sweaty little moustache looks real.
I ask him if I am a useless father
"Tickets please", he says.
He has a scar on his chin
That tells a story you don't care about right now.
I am the main character.
Man on bus.
I am staring out the window.
At a mother in a storm
With a buggy she can not put up
And a three year old daughter
With tears or rain in her eyes.
There is a story
Maybe one of domestic abuse.
If told you, you may gasp as her face
Was pushed in to the dinner she prepared.
But the conductor wants me to pay the price.
There is a crumb in his moustache.
Potato I suspect.
The bus is full of stories
The man on the back seat has two days to live
He doesn't know it.
It's an accident.
I buy my ticket.
Price paid.
Conductor rings the bell.

I like the contradiction between being the main character and a passenger, especially since the focus is on other characters. Very clever.
