I just sent a similar missive to Chrisvia after reading his excellent reply to my post about "Gravity's Rainbow", namely that I'd lately found myself with a deficit of friends who, like the intimates of my youth, possess the most fertile of minds, the sort that stimulate and delight an artsy, intellectual cheddar enthusiast like me. I attended a wee small liberal arts academy in Vermont in the early 80s, Bennington College, and at the time it was a natural home to phenoms and fountainheads of every description. I wallowed blithely as a pig in effluvium amidst the ever challenging psyches of those around me, whose intellects and talents, if anything, exceeded my own. It was wonderful, I tell you, wonderful.
Since then, however, I've had to make do with the turnip scrapings and bovine emissions that pass for ordinary mortals, the sort who spew grayness like my former mates spewed genius. I miss--I need--the challenge and delight of truly brilliant people again; academic, erudite, donnish, and with a real penchant for shredded cheddar, the kind you sprinkle in your whole grains to make 'em extra yummy.
So I'm here, seeking sybarites and highbrows. Hurl utterances at me.
