Long time ago I began reading this novel, but I cannot recall the author or the title. The plot in the first chapters went on like this:
A convicted criminal escapes through the mountains and, starving, enters the first house he sees. There, he finds a sick woman and two children, and when he tries to sneak in and steal some food, her husband arrives and catches him. The husband reveals himself to be the interrogator (or something like that) responsible for the prison sentence of the runner. After some discussion, the guy leaves through the window and is rescued by a woman in white (not a ghost!) who takes him to her house and feeds him.
That's all I remember, and it's at the very beginning. I think the woman in white was called Lucy or something like that. The author was American and it was an old novel, maybe from the 19th century or beginning of the 20th.
