It happens in the 19th century among aristocratic society. The main character Emma does not belong to that world, but is employed with a certain lady as a paid companion.

The novel begins with very rough scenes of rape try and defence by Mr. Edison, on which occasion Mr. Edison and Emma become friends and he secretly engages her to help him find his stolen 'Book of Secrets'.

Although they are doing their best to keep their relation on a business level, there is a strong attraction between them. This attraction, once, escalates into love making. But, even after that, they do not change anything and pretend that it has never happened.

There are much investigations, descriptions of their suppressed feelings, characters from the high society which is almost locked for the people from other classes.

Finally, after they find out who stole the book and after Edison's grandmother accepts Emma to be her grandson's wife in spite of the fact that her origin is not aristocratic, the two of them get married and we see them in a bedroom lit by moonlight after just said 'yes' on their wedding, happy and laughing to their recent hard endeavor to keep their relationship purely businesslike.

The plot is interesting. There are many interesting characters who all have their specific features. There is humour of Amanda Quick kind. For instance, she says for a certain man from the street that he stinks so much as if he has never had bath except when, pissed drunk, falls into a river. Erotic scenes are not too frequent and not pornographic as in some novels of this kind. They are given with a sense of good taste and are sometimes even poetic.

I was under the impression that Amanda Quick wrote historical romance but your summary makes it sound interesting.

Thanks for sharing!
