In the sixties we'd pirate music off the radio in a ruthless fashion. We'd prop a mike next to radio and blast the speaker. With one hand nervously hovering over the RECORD button, we'd listen intently to the first few cords of every new song that came up. And if we caught a song from the very first few notes, we prayed to God the stupid DJ wouldn't come in with his voice before it ended and ruin the recording, or that Mom off in the kitchen wouldn't rattle the pots and pans or drop a plate. The dog next door would bark instead, or your little brother might slam the door to the bathroom.

The reel- to-reel would slowly turn it's Magnificent Mickey Mouse Ears of Magnetic Tape while you, the evil non-respectful teenage pirate recorder, you the loud-mouthed-in-public teen-age offender, you would remain silent and pray like a monk.

We were trawling for angels, the rarest of gems, something new, something fresh, something vital, in other words, we the monks who studied the holy book of rock and roll were looking for damn good songs.

Yeah, I remember the DJ was often a nuisance even when one wasn't recording.
