Tom Daley at the minute or so I hear.
in case some of you are wondering who he is :
'' a british diver who specialises in the 10 metre platform event and was the 2009 FINA World Champion in the individual event at the age of 15''

anyways ''coming out'' is in my views such a horrid expression it almost cries out for help.

so what other expression really puts you off and why?

Why the eye rolling? What's wrong with coming out?

It's often a very difficult issue for a person to face, so it needs a name. And anyone who can screw their courage to the sticking place and come out, either to their friends or to their public, deserves respect = whether it's an Olympic diver, or any old joe.

If we don't give things a name, we make them taboo - all that 'love-that-dare-not-speak-its-name' horse**** does more harm than anything else. It's the sort of mentality that's lead to persecution for loads of different social groups throughout history.

The only distressing thing about this that I can see is that it does rather dash the romantic hopes of my 15 year old female cousin... though maybe her 16 year old brother might suddenly be more interested..?

Other expressions I loath:
1. Now lets be absolutely clear about this. (Invariably from politicians.)
2. Was there an issue? ( i.e. Was it screwed up?)
3. I'm afraid I will have to let you go. (i.e. You're fired.)
4. I'm sending you for counciling. (i.e. I'm obliged by law to do this, before I fire you.)
5. It's not you, it's me. (i.e. I've been screwing around.)
6. To tell you the truth. (i.e. You are not going to believe what's coming out of my mouth next.)
7. Can I come in for a coffee? ( i.e. My intentions are not honourable.)

the eyes rolling is not directed at Tom Daley but more at the press and the cultural stigma behind it.
I can only imagine the stress that a young athlete such as Tom has gone through. this whole culture of ''coming out'' is unnecessary. it is none of our business whether one is gay or not. this coming out is almost like having to justify one's existent in the face of the world. I think it is dated the world would just have to cope with no knowing whether one is gay or straight.

"It is what it is." (As opposed to "it is what it isn't"?)

"At the end of the day." (Beloved of the British sportscasters.)

"The Eagles control their own destiny." (Beloved of American sportscasters, but idiotic, since "destiny" MEANS a fate beyond one's control.)

from what I hear he never explicitly says he's gay so there may still be a chance for what seems like the entire female population of Britain.
