Dandelion’s Promise
I took a deep sigh of relief after I turned in my chemistry final exam to one of the TAs. Now, I don’t have to worry until Saturday, which is when my psychology final will take place. After that, I will go home and stay there until late August. I exited the Hoffman auditorium with a relief. I felt like I did well enough to get myself an A in the class. As I passed the Evergreen Square, I saw several students sitting with their friends chatting and studying for their own finals like usual, but what really caught my attention was the abundance of dandelions on the field. I used to collect them when I was little and blew their feather-like seeds into the wind. I walked on the field for a little bit before I found a dandelion that’s neither big nor small. I picked it up and was about to blow it when someone walked up to me and told me not to do it now.
I looked up and saw Aaron Winfrey standing right in front of me. He looked handsome as always wearing his black-framed glasses, red jacket with a dark blue T-shirt underneath, blue jeans, and black sneakers. Most people would call him “nerd” but I wouldn’t.
“What are you doing out in the sunshine cutie pie?” I teased him.
“Nothing really, just enjoying the weather. Did you just finish your chemistry exam?” He asked, blushing after I called him “cutie pie”.
“Yup. I think I did decent enough to get a good grade in the class” said I.
“That’s good. Do you want to sit with me under that shade?” He pointed to the giant oak tree next to Huey and Zimmerman building.
I agreed and we walked to the shade under giant oak tree. There, I spotted a blonde boy and a red-head girl snuggling at a spot next to where Aaron’s backpack lies.
I wish I could do that with Aaron, I thought jealously.
Aaron removed his glasses and placed them in his bag. I blushed when I saw him without his glasses. He looks like the actor in a romantic-comedy movie that I watched as a kid. He then lied down under the shade and asked me to join him. I was about to say no but when I looked into his eyes, I could not help but comply with his request. Before I lied down next to him, I took off my light jacket and placed it on the ground where I could place my head and then put my backpack down on my left side.
I lied down, facing Aaron. For a minute, I felt like I was Bella from Twilight and he was Edward, the beautiful vampire.
“You look lovely when you’re lying down Jodie” Aaron pointed out to me.
“Not really, you look like a model when you’re in this position”
He laughed and pulled me closer to him.
“I think I look like a model when I’m with you. We make a beautiful couple” he joked.
I giggled and then told him he has to let go of me because he made me drop the dandelion that I picked up from the ground earlier. He unwrapped himself from me and reached for the dandelion that I dropped.
“It’s beautiful” he noted my dandelion as he held it in his hand.
He then asked me if I know the saying about two people keeping their promises to each other once they blew their respective dandelions.
I shook my head and said “no”.
“It’s something my mother use to tell me when I was little. After my dad and mom got married, my dad made a promise to her that he will never leave her and she made a promise that she will never leave him. Then, they blew their dandelions together”.
“Awww, that’s a cute story.”
Aaron then sat up and told me we should collect dandelions on this piece of field. I wholeheartedly agreed and we both got up.
In less than 10 minutes, we collected a total of 12 dandelions. After we finished collecting, we went back under the shade where the blonde boy and red girl were still snuggling. We sat down at our spot and began blowing the seeds off of the dandelions we collected.
After we each have one left, Aaron decided we both should make a promise to each other.
“I promise you, Jodie Anderson, that I will come back and visit you next year” He said and blew the seeds off of the dandelion.
“Your turn” He said.
I thought for a moment and then finally decided that I promise to keep in touch with him all throughout college. I then blew the seeds off of the dandelion.
We watched as the dandelions’ seeds disappear into the grass. When they can no longer be seen, Aaron linked my right hand with his left hand.
I looked him with surprise and asked him if there’s anything important he want to say to me.
He said “yes” and told me he will miss me next year. He hated to leave me behind but he leaving this school is for the best because he felt like a misfit here.
“We’ll have to keep in touch through text messages and Skype. I’ll get a Skype account as soon as I get home. I don’t want to forget your beautiful face”.
He then pressed his lips against mine and kissed me for about a minute before letting go.
“I think I’m in love with you,” He said as he pressed his forehead against mine, “I wanted to kiss you since early February”
I opened my mouth to ask him about Elise but he shut me up by kissing me again and answered the question that was on my mind.
“I never loved Elise. I pretended to be her boyfriend to make her happy since she was obsessed with me but I was in love with you all along. I told her about a week ago that we should break up because I’m going to be attending another college next year and I dislike long-distance relationship. But in actuality, I am in love with you and it pains me to see you sad when I’m with Elise. I miss your smile. That’s why you didn’t see Elise in the rec room with me last week. She’s upset with me but I have no regret of what I said”.
I almost felt like crying. The people in our hall got it wrong, again. They thought Aaron was happy with Elise but he wasn’t.
“Aaron?” I asked nervously.
“Hmmm?”
“Do you promise that you’ll come back and visit me next year?”
He raised my hand to his lips and kissed my knuckles.
“I promise on the seeds of dandelions”.
