I have a kindle, and I feel tips on speed reading won't work with an e-reader? Could someone give me advice?

Don't know about speed reading tips but I find I read much faster on my kindle. I think it is because the page is narrower and I am able to read a line of words in one go. Instead of moving my eyes from left to right I just read up and down as though I am reading a newspaper column.

There's no reason that speed reading techniques wouldn't work on a Kindle. Speed reading is mostly about eye span (taking in more words at a time), efficient eye movement, reading in "thought chunks" rather than word-by-word, minimizing sub-vocalization (saying words in your head), and not backtracking. There's nothing about that that's incompatible with a Kindle. In fact, I find speed reading easier on a Kindle because I can get better, more consistent contrast (not having to worry about external lighting conditions), and can turn pages just by touching the screen (flipping real book pages slows you down more than you think).

The reason is that one of the best speed reading technique is to place a finger along the line you're reading on a page. This is not possible with Kindle because when you place a finger on the page it moves to either the next page or the previous page..

Also, I have big fingers, and the kindle fire screen is narrow. Using the finger technique is annoying for me. To try to read at a faster and easier pace , I use a small font. Using my fingers is hard when I have to focus on small letters. If I use a bigger font, it'll still be awkward doe to the short lines and the short pages that come with a bigger font. Plus, I have some PDF documents which start out extremely small which I have to zoom in every time I turn a page. I'm not quite sure which would be a good font size for speed reading.

The reason is that one of the best speed reading technique is to place a finger along the line you're reading on a page.Errr, you don't have to actually TOUCH the page to use the finger technique. I learned this very early on as I was reading a very new book and the ink was actually rubbing off on my fingers when I was running them along the page. So I just lifted my fingers off the page 1/2-inch or so and found it much easier.
Also, I have big fingers, and the kindle fire screen is narrow.I don't have that problem as I use Kindle for my iPad, which is a full-sized tablet (I can quite comfortably fit about 15-20 words-per-line). However, I still find the finger technique works on, say, newspapers or magazines where you often have very narrow columns. Depending on the words-per-line you can sweep your fingers vertically across multiple lines. You might try using fewer words-per-line and reading it more like a newspaper; just turn the kindle horizontally to get two pages on both halves of the Kindle (at least, that's how it works on my Kindle-for-iPad). One thing about speed reading is that you just have to find what works best for you. One thing I love about e-readers is that you can completely customize the layout. It should make for easier speed-reading.
