Well that didn't take long. I must say I'm disappointed, I've read the first two and to be honest I'm not finding them that great (but to be clear, I did like The Catcher in the Rye).

Birthday Boy is very typical Salinger. It has the feel of 'A perfect day for bananafish' It is quite dark and deals with post traumatic stress disorder and alcoholism. Commercially it would have been a bit hard to publish this pre-Catcher in the Rye as there is little enlightenment and the ending is without resolution or redemption for that matter.

I read about one of them. These are apparently very early stories, and this one was an attempt at horror. It sounds rather dark, and like "Birthday Boy" without redemption.
