I have read 2 Joyce biographies: Bowker's and Ellman's. In one of these there is a reference to Joyce saying he regretted making Ulysses too formulaic, and that it was too rigid in its adherence to the structure of the odyssey. Well that's how I remember it roughly. Does anyone know the exact quote?

Ellman's biography has an index. I would recommend just looking up Odyssey in the index and checking page numbers for the quote. You might also have luck with Stuart Gilbert's book or Frank Budgen's.

I vaguely remember this being stated in either Gilbert or in Anthony Burgess's Re-Joyce (maybe both).
