Suppose someone has three tings: one wolf, one sheep, and a heap of grass, and he wants to carry them by his boat to the other side of the river provided that the wolf won't eat the sheep and the sheep won't eat the grass.
How can he do that successfully?
Moreover, it is unable to carry more than one thing in each time.

1. Bring the sheep to the other side, leaving the wolf and grass.
2. Go back empty leaving the sheep on the other side.
3. Bring the wolf to the other side, leaving the grass.
4. Bring sheep back, leaving the wolf on the other side alone.
5. Bring grass to the other side leaving the sheep alone.
6. Go back empty, leaving the wolf and grass on the other side.
7. Bring the sheep.

Or before the crossing, make a mutton dinner with greens.

Drown the wolf as it serves no purpose to the owner. Don't bother taking the grass as he can get some more on the other side.

I'd set them a race myself and get the grass on the side. they do say the grass is always greener on the other side and all that.

LOL well it was obvious. I mean this is if the wolf and the sheep and the grass have not eaten each other up before the man get set up with his boat. :D

Why doesn't the wolf eat the man and the sheep?
I'll assume that the sheep and you are some distance from the wolf, initially.
1. Bring the sheep to the other side, quickly, before wolf catches you, leaving the wolf and grass.
2. Go back empty leaving the sheep on the other side, swimming, and pushing, behind the boat and hope the wolf doesn't see you. Wait till wolf jumps in the boat.
3. Bring the wolf to the other side, leaving the grass, still swimming and pushing the boat; go some distance down stream away from sheep.
4. Row quickly back to sheep, bring sheep back, leaving the wolf on the other side alone, somewhere *far* away
5. Bring grass to the other side leaving the sheep alone.
6. Go back empty, leaving the wolf and grass on the other side.
7. Bring the sheep.

MA,
It looks like I'm late to the party. If you haven't attempted the crossing and still scratching your head wondering how to "get 'er dun", then allow me to offer a simple, practical solution. Install two bulkheads (partitions) in the hull, creating three separate compartments. I would suggest placing the wolf in the bow end compartment and the sheep at the stern. As you're cutting into the wind, you want the sheep downwind of the wolf.
The center compartment will contain the grass sod. The sod is quite heavy, so placing it in the center compartment will result in proper weight distribution allowing the boat to draft properly. Make sure you distribute the sod evenly from port to starboard as well.
Safe handling of the cargo can be achieved by installing a hatch for each compartment, allowing you to load or unload, in any order you desire. The best part in this solution...? - one crossing! Think about it; less fuel, or muscle power if this is a row boat.
Hope this was helpful.
