A selfie is a picture taken by oneself.

It is all the rage on social messaging and websites with folk taking self portraits.

It could have been twerking. Just remember how much worse it could have been.

Let's do the twerk, like we did last summer...

In twenty years time it will be quaintly remembered. It's not like anyone gets upset by the Charleston anymore.

There's a part of me that really believes the word of the year is announced just to cause outrage.

They are not always so. Here's a link to the OED's press release that lists previous winners - soduku, podcast and unfriend also get mentions.

That's a rather old word to be getting that award. "Selfie" has been around for at leas fifty years.

The award isn't necessarily awarded to new words. The press release says; " Language research conducted by Oxford Dictionaries editors reveals that the frequency of the word selfie in the English language has increased by 17,000% since this time last year."

I live quite close to Oxford, so I'll see if I can get an invite to next year's award ceremony and write an exclusive live report.

I am subscribed to the Urban online dictionary and when I checked the messages I found the following:
This is the original message and I don't change any letter, I post it as it was!
Selfie:

word of the day: October 12, 2012

1- A picture taken of yourself that is planned to be uploaded to Facebook, Myspace or any other sort of social networking website. You can usually see the person's arm holding out the camera in which case you can clearly tell that this person does not have any friends to take pictures of them so they resort to Myspace to find internet friends and post pictures of themselves, taken by themselves. A selfie is usually accompanied by a kissy face or the individual looking in a direction that is not towards the camera.
2-Selfie
A strange phenomenon in which the photographer is also the subject of the photograph, in a subversive twist on the traditional understanding of the photograph. Usually conducted because the subject cannot locate a suitable photographer to take the photo, like a friend.
Hugh-man 1: Charles, my prince! I see you took a selfie last night! I found this out on the book of faces, on the interwebz. Ghastly stuff, those selfies!

Hugh-man 2: Leave Charles alone! If he doesn't want to have friends, that is his prerogative!

Charles mumbles inaudibly as they gag him and put him in the back of a van.

3. selfie
Eating an entire dish or platter designed for sharing, such as nachos or wings, yourself in a social setting without sharing.
Dang those Nachos look good, can I try them? No dude I'm pulling a selfie, get your own nachos!
4-Selfie
A ridiculous practice of narcissism
Girl: Taking pics in bathroom mirror. Sends it to guy
Guy: Gets pic of girl in "selfie"..oh brother
Girl: :]
Guy: Stop sending me selfies!

5-selfie
The taking of a picture of yourself and posting it on Facebook because you have extremely low self-esteem and you need people to comment to tell you how hot or pretty you look. In reality you just look desperate for attention. And no matter how attractive you might be, you still look pathetic. See also duck face/kissy face makes you look retarded.
My attractive friend takes a lot of selfies and won't hang out with people hotter than her.
6-selfie
noun and verb: A photograph taken with a camera phone or to take a photograph with a camera phone. Just how the word 'literally' was literally misused so much that its meaning was officially changed to include the formerly incorrect definition, so the word selfie has a history of misuse so that it can now also refer to a photo taken with a camera. The person who took the photo can call it a selfie because they themselves took the photo.
Check out this awesome selfie I took of the Eiffel tower.
7- Selfie
A photo taken of yourself to be posted to social media, which is not all that different from masturbating if makes you feel satisfied with yourself.
My homework was too boring, so I took a selfie of me taking a selfie and posted it to tumblr and Facialbook so others could too, because I'm not self-ish.

When yours fooly was a whippersnapper back in the Jurassic Era, there was a popular phrase uttered whenever one caught someone else staring: "Take a picture--it lasts longer!" But why would one need a "selfie?" What, did all the mirrors break?
Maybe the vampires from True Blood hid them alll.

I say that when I read some of your poems. You're known for taking the English language to the chop shop to suit your creative pursuit so why be bothered about this?

Hi Cacian, I am always with you when you discuss the matter precisely.
yes, of course the psychology is one of the factors which stands behind understanding meaning, in addition what we call the pragmatic meaning .
The context of situation guides us always to understand the hidden meaning because the meaning isn't always obvious at the surface, sometimes we need to do deep analysis.
Why did he say this and why didn't he say that?

LOL Delta I like your straightforwardness. a quality much admired. it is not so much a bother as much as an interest on how such tiny can become so big. in a world of selflessness one may pay greater attention to every word including selfie.

that is the point. you put your finger on it. hidden. should there be hidden meanings to a word? is a good question.
how many secrets until we discover all?
