I've been thinking a lot about re-reading recently, how reading a book repeatedly can reveal something deeper about it, and also about the reader. So in 2014 I'm resolved to become a repeat reader, returning to books, authors, I have loved. I haven't fully fleshed out my list yet (I could spend the whole year re-reading, there are so many great books that I've read) but I'd like to include the following writers:
Tove Jansson
Angela Carter
David Mitchell
Helen DeWitt
Doris Lessing
Plus I think I would like to read Kristen Lavransdatter again, and The Luminaries both of which are huge and dense and benefit from more than one reading. I'm sure there will be more, the hard part will be choosing.

I do this occasionally with certain books. The Fear and Loathing books by Hunter S Thompson always get another go around, especially the Campaign Trail, as it was him at his best.

I must have read the Watchmen by Alan Moore ten times. That book always reveals something else every time I pick it up. It's beautifully put together.

Once a wise man told me that you need read a book three times for appreciating it really: the first time you are attracted to the story and you forget the details; the second you can read the details with more attention, and only the third time you can have a glance at entire work and be capable to evaluate it.
Actually I've never read a book more than once, because I haven't patience and I would end up with jump all that things I could remember, but I'm going to repair this defect. In fact, I'm going to re-read one of my favorite books...Anna Karenina.

I might re-read The Iliad in a different translation later in 2014, which would be record speed for a re-read with me.
