A great shame - one of the greatest writers of our time.

Still, she was a very old lady and had had a long and highly successful career.

I was waiting for official confirmation, hoping this was not true. A sad day, but as Loka says she had a long and fruitful and successful career. And based on her character she would probably think we were idiots for caring, but I am still sad. She was a personal hero to me, an intelligent and authoritative woman who wrote with insight and compassion and had an unerring eye for human idiosyncrasies. Kick *ss in the afterlife Doris, you grand old woman you.

I'm sure she is running things 'up there'!

I was reading The Golden Notebook whilst I was working as a hod carrier in Birmingham in 1989. I used to read it in the cabin at dinner, but didn't get to discuss it much....

She was 94.We all have to go sometime. It's probably harder for those she left behind and for those who love her writing who will always wish there could have been more.

I read The Golden Notebook a while back. A fantastic, thought-provoking, psychologically immersive book.
