Why Big Brother?

Is there a reason the government decided to call the new system Big Brother? I think it was the governments attempt at creating a good relationship with its people (brother) while also holding authority (big), or am I just over-thinking the name?

i believe that that is exactly what they are trying to do, and in return being able to suggest false comfort and support through the name. Also by giving the people false support, they can then minipulate the peoples trust in their party.

It is not so much that, but in another perspective, your big brother would always be watching over you, such as the posters of Big Brother depict, with eyes always following people.
