Winston remembers the dream between him and O'Brien and when they pass each other Winston feels a connection with him. What does this symbolize in the novel?

O'Brien is the most intelligent and gifted character in the book. He totally understands and is able to articulate everything that is wrong with the IngSoc. He is completely able to understand why Winston cannot cope with the system, which he can explain to Winston better than Winston can articulate himself. But does that mean O'Brien is a sympathetic character? No, he is entirely cynical.

I agree with The Atheist. I believe that this simply symbolizes the fact that when people are lacking hope, they will desperately grasp at whatever meager bit of hope they can find.
