I believe they have the "Two Minutes of Hate", to unite the nation in some way, and somewhat a "distraction" per/say to the corruption of the government and whats going on. I may not be correct, but hey, thats how i see it :P

It's to let out the sexual frustration from turning sex into a mechanical act of procreation only.

Deprived of sex, you can guarantee the people are going to get pretty angry very easily.

To ensure the anger is never turned against the Party, the Two Minute Hate gives them an outlet.

So this is sort of "comforting" to the sex-deprived?

(comforting said loosely)

Not at all - there was no comfort intended. It's entirely about channeling negative emotions.

It "distracts" the citizens of Oceania from doing intercourse. It in a way replaces the desire of sex with a feeling of hate.

The Big Brother government uses the "Two minutes of hate" to distract the population from other problems and used as a tool to brainwash the governed. The propaganda used is supposed to brainwash and imprint on the minds of everyone who is watching it. The two minutes of hate is always practiced everyday imprinting slowly onto the people, like dogs to commands; this is what i call the art of stimulus response. By using it everyday the government controls the lives of those they govern, if one day the two minutes does not happen the brainwashed will feel weird since the action did not occur. Thus the government has a hold of their lives and spirits.

The two minutes is also primarily used to distract the people of the government. Instead of thinking of personal problems and daily life the people live in fear and only think about the "hate" or propaganda used. Instead of worrying that a man has no food he will worry about a war hundreds of miles away and the fear of being killed. While not worrying on personal problems and government the party of Big Brother will be able to change any laws or rules without rebellion from the people.

This act of propaganda has given the government of 1984 full control of both the spirit of those they govern and what the rules are. This also is occurring in the real world nearly 40 years later; iPods and or electrical devices are distracting us from whats really important and involvement in government.

Hopefully this answers your question.

"Two minutes of hate" is simply a way to release everybody's pent up emotions, in a way that can unify the people as well, by using a common enemy. I also believe that they use the "two minutes of hate" to see who is or isn't participating fully, then they can be "handled". If they are not showing the amount of anger that everyone else is toward their common enemy, then the Thought Police could find them guilty of Thought Crime.

The use of the "Two minutes of Hate" is to unify the entire community with a common enemy and fear. It is also used to get rid of any frustration or anger at these situations or people rather than having the people join together and revolt against the government or turn against the ways of Big Brother. Mostly it is used as a distraction to the people of their daily lives and awful conditions that they never seem to question because they're too distracted by these "News" pieces, which are really all just propaganda and lies, than to worry about their own lives. The "Two minutes of Hate" I believe is also used by the thought police or spies to determine if there is any "thought criminals" in their midst. This "Two minutes of Hate" is a tool used by the government to contain its peoples and to make sure that they are participating in these organized rituals and to "vaporize" any of those who will not participate or are believed to be "thought criminals". So in all reality this is an essential tool for the government's own use and it appears to work well and to the government's benefit.

In 1984, the two minutes of hate are used to both distracted society and to unify the society. In the novel we see what happens during the two minutes of hate, the telescreens show enemies of the state people act chaotically and show no sense of knowing what's happening, they just show pure rage. Even though these two minutes of hate seem helpful to society but, actually this event is distracting their society. Big Brother ( the government) use the Two minutes of hate to distract people from realizing what is really happening. And since the two minutes of hate happen everyday society is brainwashed to think a certain way.
Also the two minutes of hate are used to unify their society. The two minutes of hate help unify their society by giving the population an enemy to hate together and want to achieve the same goals. But this unification also is negative because since the population will do anything to stop that threat. The government can take advantage of this sense of unity because when a society is unified or a has a lot of nationalism they an become rash and only worry about that threat.

Many people believe that the Two Minutes of Hate is a form of distraction used by Big Brother to hide the government's corruption from the general public. It is two minutes dedicated to the military leaders preaching to the citizens of Oceania about the current war status between either Eurasia or Eastasia; seeing as the leaders of Oceania can never seem to decide which is their friend and which is their foe. The Two Minutes of Hate is the only time that citizens are able to show any sign of emotion. Any other time of the day, all of Oceania is required to wear a certain facial expression and be sure not to use any suggestive body language.

This also acts as a tool to unify the nation under a mutual hate and fear. Mutual hatred allows people to have something to have honor in as well as a willingness to support, therefore having something in common that makes them feel closer to one another. Also, the constant fear of being annihilated makes in easier for Big Brother to keep the citizens under wraps and almost eliminating any chance of rebellion. It is their primary source of release.

The Two Minutes of Hate is also Big Brother's main source of distraction from the extreme corruption and dishonesty in the government. If the citizens are constantly worried about their country's status in the ongoing war, then they are not worried about the lack of electricity, food, water, etc. in their village. The government uses the Two Minutes of Hate as a way to control the citizens into believing that their country's status is more important than their general quality and way of life.
