Why was the photograph of Rutherford, Aaronson and Jones important? How/did it serve a significant purpose in this novel?

It was physical proof they actually existed, and indeed the only proof they existed. They had been expunged from all Party records and information, so there was no evidence to show that the official records were wrong.
