In 1984, the leader is Big Brother. He is always watching people on the telescreens and sometimes he would show himself on there.
There is a show called big brother where contestants live in a house together where there are cameras in every room that people are always watching and they all follow the orders of a "leader" who shows up on a television screen and tells them what their next challenge is in the game.
Is there there any way the show could be based off the book?

It seems to me as if the show is based on the book. Although you did say the contestants are being watched through a camera and not a telescreen, I would say they are very similar. They both have the concepts of being watched, being told what to do, and if not obeyed, suffering consequences. One of the big reasons I think the show is based on the book is because the show is called "Big Brother". Either me and you are correct, or this is just a major coincidence

No question the inventors of the TV show had read the book. Big Brother has been part of English lexicon ever since 1984 was published.
