I ran across an interesting article on Marianne Moore in N.Y. Review of Books. Apparently, Moore’s father was insane (he was institutionalized), and his particular “ delusional monomania” was that he had been chosen to find the truths in the Bible. He cut off his own right hand, because of the biblical admonition “if your right hand offend you, cut it off.”
Moore’s mother was also eccentric and dictatorial (she separated from the father before Moore was born).

Personally, I always liked Moore ever since I learned that she claimed to be in love with Christy Mathewson.
