I use to think that Iago was as cunning and clever as he thought he was, but after studying the play this year for school , i realised how vulnerable he really was.
His own weaknesses caused him to become that cynical, spiteful creature that revels in the pain of others.
He feels that he isn't worth much, that he has nothing to pride himself in, and so he lives in his own fantasy world where he thinks hes a lot more cunning than he really is. In reality, though he presents himself as the trustworthy "honest Iago", he fears that soon, someone will see him for who he really is and so he hates and fears everyone, just like he hates and fears himself.
It wasnt just his genius that was responsible for Othello's downfall.
If read carefully, a lot of things contributed to it.
We never really saw him creating a specific plan, it just happened that the opportunities popped up at the right moment and he took advantage of them e.g. when Bianca turned up accusing Cassio of trying to make her copy another womans handkerchief while Othello was listening.
Therefore, Iago wasn't half as clever as he thought he was, because if he was, he would have gotten away with what he did.
