In the bleakness

Don't go back down the road
where he drums his fingers impatiently,
machete glowing in
the aromatic candlelight
that he bought you
as a gift
from the last time
he throttled you so badly
visions of your childhood
swam before your eyes.

In the blackness

Don't walk back
shrouded in excuses
wearing them like a thick
heavy burka,
your fake defiance overflowing
when every woman
knows and understands
your truth
because they talk about you
over coffee and biscuits.

Don't go deaf from their silence
in the night when you
tear away from him screaming
and run, run, run
hoping that you might find
some kind of sanctuary,
that elusive shining miracle
yet always it's only the
street-lit corner
where feral cats
hunt down rats.

Don't go back down the road.
This time Joan,
I'm right here.

I really like your poem of this woman's plight, Delta. I like the excuses/burka similie and the machete/candlelight/gift connection.

I was expecting a one line intro to S3.

Great title too.
