Are there agreed symbols for showing this what a characters thinks like quotation marks are for what a character talks?

If a charterer pants or coughs mid-sentence for example, is it written as *cough*, <cough>, (cough) or something else?

Thoughts are often put in italics, but they really should be described as thoughts in the narrative.

I tend to use italics.

Italics some authors add a he thought, some just let it float. for coughing, you can just write, he coughed into the narrative.
