I know that my world
has crumbled around me.
All the armies have been defeated,
all hope has been crushed.
My way of life is coming to an end
and a new world is beginning.
But I also know there is no way
that I can fit in to this new world
of commerce and free blacks.
So I walk slowly up the graceful staircase
to the second floor of my mansion
with the Greek columns in front,
and I look at some pictures
and read some letters that were written
by one of my beaus years ago.
I sigh, but I realize
there is no turning back,
my world is ended--
so I take the case
from the closet and open it
and pull out the pistol
and point it at the fair curls
on my head.
It's better this way.

I like the personal touch you have added. This one will stand on its own, two feet.

It did improve the poem by changing the second person to first person
