We are dancing because we will die
The band are playing for money
We are dancing because we will die
Old man with nothing to lose
Clinging to a glass with ice
And something young
In a strapless top
Dance old f ucker, dance.
The music is loud enough
To pump the heart
And spill beer
And stop the voices
We dance because we should try.
Woop, grind, shout for more
Black Betty bam the lam
In a euphoric crowd
I am writing a poem
In perfect isolation,
Dancing with the boys
Sucking on glass necks.
They think they dance to a rhythm,
They dance because they will die.
Somebody is out of line
It's time to kill
With a broken bottle
Or sheer desire
I will kill the bastard
He was asking for it
Dancing with my girl
He didn't know
That she didn't know
She was dancing
Because she will die.

I nominate you for the 2013 lit-net poet of the year

I can't help wondering what John Betjeman would say but he'd probably think the poet was Larkin about.
