Imaginary Feathers
On wings that he alone could see
He soared into eternity
And challenged death that star filled night
Seeking peace on a one way flight
The shackles of mortality
Released him from reality
And for a moment lost in flight
With wings out stretched he found the light
Across a cosmic sea of peace
As pain and sorrow seemed to cease
A fellow traveler graced his wing
He fancied that he heard her sing
Imaginary feathers fell
Like fetters from a binding spell
As solace from a few found light
Dispelled the mist of mortal night
On wings that only he could see
He soared on through the cosmic sea
And saw new light beyond the Earth
And found new peace in his rebirth
At eventide in solitude
(Coyote)
At eventide in solitude
I stopped to spend the night
Beneath a mountain cold and dark
And made a fire for light
Paid homage to what Gods were there
And blessed the night with peace
I listened to the melodies
Of night that never cease
My little fire a beacon in
The night upon a hill
Invited wandering souls and staved
Me from the cold night chill
Beside my fire and lost in time
I thought I heard my name
A voice from the edge of night
Beyond the dancing flame
Come hither friend you know my name
My fire is free for all
Come share my fire and solitude
Cast off your cold nights pall
A Coyote stepped forth from the night
With gaunt and hungry eyes
That pierced my soul as if they were
Two stars plucked from the skies
I bid him welcome to my fire
And solace from all fear
He offered in return His song
As though I were His peer
Again he plainly spoke my name
And touched my inner heart
He spoke at length of wisdom that
For me he would impart
A wisdom from the edge of night
Before each day is done
Alive in roots of Oak and Pine
That grow were rivers run
His eyes met mine and pierced my soul
He asked If could heal
The cuts and wounds of many roads
And scars he still could feel
In truth I said I can’t undo
The footsteps you have tread
Only that wisdom from the past
May guide me where I’m led
The Coyote slowly spoke at length
As labored for each word
He made sure that each word He spoke
Was one I clearly heard
Each road is mine I walk along
The way is clearly shown
No one can stay my errant step
Each wound is mine alone
The coyote bid farewell at last
He vanished in the night
Though bright my fire, His wisdom was
By far the brighter light
On wings that he alone could see
He soared into eternity
And challenged death that star filled night
Seeking peace on a one way flight
The shackles of mortality
Released him from reality
And for a moment lost in flight
With wings out stretched he found the light
