1941, cold wind blowing hard as I take my shovel to dig trenches. Heavy thumps I hear from the sounds of our shovels striking the ground and snow. Being outside of Moscow is far from enjoyment even this is the reason I joined the army.
One time, I and some soldiers from my squad was ordered to patrol the perimeter. It was freezing. I was trying to enjoy that brief moment of freedom. Aiming my gun at a bird, with a little sunlight it was next to impossible to kill it. Calming my heavy breath, inhaling and exhaling as I breathe the air softly. And when I pulled the trigger, it didn’t explode. I didn’t know why it didn’t explode. So I tried to check it, and then some seconds later. As I was checking out my rifle, I heard a loud explosion of a gun a second later. And then a thud when our squad leader fell to the snow. Witnessing what happened made me panic, while my mates are shouting. They’re trying to see through the thick snow. I was hiding in the bushes waiting for them to reveal themselves. When my two mates thought it was over, they went to the leader. As I was expecting, another two continuous shots were fired. My heart had beat much more harder knowing there were two snipers. I was thinking on how to get out of here. Now, I was feeling as cold as the snow. I never thought of being stuck with a useless rifle. I saw my other mate shooting at every direction. I saw some water at his face, I assumed it was tears. I saw at the other two trying to crawl to run away. When I tried to look at some of the trees, I saw a shadow. And then a flash from where I saw it, my mate falls down. Shot in the head, lifelessly fell down. I saw a gun near me, a MP40. I crawled for it, and then hid at the back of a tree. Despite the cold, all I wanted was to stay and kill them. So I waited for some time to calm myself. When my heart had been calm, I tried to put my pointing finger in the trigger. So when I saw another shadow, I shoot at it continuously. And then the shadow fell, I felt a little happy. And I took the chance to run.

When it was late 2, I stopped running. I did wonder why I was not followed. And now, I was looking for lunch, I walked for several of tens of minutes so that I can find a suitable place to eat in. The cold weather had made the canned goods harder to open. I opened it by putting the tip of the knife on the top of the bottle and then smashing a rock at the back of the knife. I was so desperate to eat food that time, so I opened two canned foods.

I was starting to feel unsure, knowing that I’d be hunted for that time. I decided to take rest for I thought it would not be a little comfortable. When the darkness slowly covered the forest, only my fire that I made was the one only providing warmth. The wind outside the cave was very strong. It made the branches outside crack, and falls. So strong that everytime they blow, my fire is left almost out. Shivering cold is felt by my body everytime the wind blows. The cold does not let me sleep as it blows everytime. So bad, later that night, because the wind has blown the fire I made. I was sleeping a dark and cold night. Being alone made it worse.
When it was morning, I still feel so cold. Fever is inside me, but it’s only me in here. And only I can take care of myself. I stood up, seeing that all is snow still. I opened another can, and eat. When I went outside, I didn’t know where to go. I learned navigation using stars, but for days here, there are no clear skies. It’s just white, gray and darkness. I decided to walk to the opposite direction where I and my mates encounter the Soviets. I assumed that’s where we came from.
Walking for hours, as it become days I hesitated. I ran out of food immediately, but I still had hope. This made me walk for many days. Now I know I was lost and far from Moscow. Little far, near the horizon, I saw some men with guns on their hand. I know these guys were my brothers, Germans. When they saw me, they took me in their arms. I felt warmth, I was so cold. They let me eat, for I was so hungry. They brought me to a hospital that day.
Two days earlier, I was brought back to serve the Fatherland.
Fortifying the camp is really useless. Rockets from their trucks just destroy our fortifications. Now we’re going to have our last desperate offensive to take Moscow once and for all. If this fails, we have no options other than to retreat.
All of us are going to march toward it. We now have few tanks, most have been frozen due to the weather. When we started marching, it was tiring. Carrying a heavy bag while having many stops was too much. Later, there was no line anymore. I got left behind because I was taking rests. When I look at them, they are in a distance. So I run to them, every step was so tiring. And then I saw a flash at my left. And then a blackout.

I woke up at a dark room, with a lady also lying down. She was holding a Nagant. Then my thoughts told me “Oh, I’m in the hands of my enemies!” She was holding food in her hands, she offered me. When I was trying to move my right hand, I felt an excruciating pain. Now I remember what happened last time. I was shot. Now I’m here either to be a P.O.W. or to provide them secrets. I expect my knife is still in my pocket. But when my hand reached for it, it wasn’t there. And I also realized that I was topless, and they cured my gun wound. But adrenaline still pumps hard, I rise from the bed. I tried to punch her in her face with my left hand, but someone kicked me at my back. It was so strong that I was thrown back to the bed. The food she offered is now useless, so I made use of the fork. The lady also made use of her rifle. She tried to calm me, but she was unable to do so. She was shouting at me, but there was nothing that I could understand so I charged to her. She didn’t have any other choices other than to shoot me. I was turned to my right that entered in my right arm. And two other ladies appeared just looking at me. The 4 ladies are trying to get me to the bed. One of them ran to somewhere that when she got back she had morphine with her. I was bleeding the whole time. I was panicking, trying to move at every direction just to get away. But they were strong, holding me firm on the bed. Then their eldest lady punched me on my face; knocking me out.
When I woke up, I am in a cell. Then I saw a new lady with their eldest, just outside of the cell. They were speaking with each other. Then they looked at me when they noticed I was awake. Then Layla, the new one, asked me if I was hungry in English. I was quiet for a second, trying to regain my full consciousness. Then I answered Yes in English also. Then there was only silence in the room for almost half an hour. They were looking at me, but I can’t look at them. I was afraid they will kill me. I was just looking at my chest, because everytime I look at them, the glare of their eyes can kill me. When I was served with the food, the one who shot me was the one who fed me. As both of my arms were hurt by her, but I didn’t know why it’s her. I don’t understand Russian. When she walked in, I was looking at her being afraid of what would she do to me. When she was trying to feed me, I still was not looking at them. Then the leader entered the cell and took over. For over a minute she was feeding me, she tried to talk to me. But I could not understand so I was quiet. And when she shouted, I looked at her for I was stunned. And then a very hard slap came into my face. And then when I was trying to get up to fight, I was facing her pistol, a Tokarev. Then I calmed myself as I didn’t have any other choice. Then she shouted to my shooter which sent her to some parts of their base unknown to me. Then Layla came later. Layla sat down but the elder didn’t. She was still holding her gun but she was not aiming it at me at least. They were speaking at each other that kind of made my nose wanting to bleed. And I was interrogated. I answered most of their questions, but the beating was still inevitable. I was not fed when I felt hungry, I was starving that I was looking to a can outside my cell. This continued for several days, I assumed they lost. And they are not feeding me well because they don’t have enough for themselves. I am always starving, maybe not worse than the last time. But I am still pretty bad looking. When I established a plan to escape, I immediately made preparations. My arms had already healed themselves, but I still keep healing them. When the time has come right, I picked the locked with a thin metal from the can. It was a total silence, so I assumed it was night. I saw someone sleeping, but they were not going to be my problem. It was figuring the way out. When Layla saw me, she immediately fired against me. I leaned back in order not to be shot. Our guns were blazing, and I was too. Even I am hungry, the thought of winning was my only way to get out of here and it was my hope that I could get out of here. When I was hurrying to outrun the bullet, it hit me. But it was powerless to stop me. I know that I am much more stronger than a shell of metal and brass. And pain itself is a feeling that can be stopped.
When I saw stairs leading upward. I took it, and then I felt the coldness. But the wind was not that hard everytime it blows. I know that the Spring was coming. After all, it’s February now in 1942. A month of captivity from the Russian Women. I can say that women are strong, but strength has been out of the league when I knew my allies has been pushed far out from Moscow. Looking at this white desert, I knew I had to take care of myself and wait for this war to finish itself and bring peace. All have resulted nonsense since we started invading lands. When strength doesn’t matter in this world, but the brotherhood that build the world.
