A LIFE SAVED
MANJUNATH was a lonely young man. He worked in a school as a teacher. He was a strange person, different from others. He was born with a curse, the curse of honesty and that made him very lonely and sad always. Because he was honest, he could see through the dishonesty of others. He lived a suppressed life and though he acted jolly and detached, he carried a secret pain...he knew what he was but he did not know how to express his self...he lived with that untouched and unexpressed soul and it was deep pain all the time..he was close to all yet close to none...nobody understood him and he could see why so he was caught up within, he did not hate but always he would end up hating, he did not know how really to live with his honesty, how really to survive with his circumstances, why really to live.....
The story that I am going to tell you is the time when his life turned and it happened simply and this is how it happened.
A new principal was appointed in the school. His name was Narasimha. This man was a passionate educationist. He was 60 years old and had retired and was planning to put all his knowledge and experiences in the form of writings. He wanted a school in his small town of Ongole and wanted to continue working. He had a friend who recommended this school and he readily joined.
It was the first day and Narasimha called a meeting of all the teachers. The time was 4.30 and all the students had left in the buses and the teachers were told to stay back for the principal for an hour. It was a large hall in which all sat and Manjunath too was present along with 50 other teachers. All were full of anticipation regarding the new principal except Manjunath. He had grown cynical at the early age of 26 and he felt that it would be the same routine and he was also slightly irritated because he liked to get back to his room and relax at this time of the day.
All were waiting for the principal and on the dot at 4.45 he entered. Narasimha was a tall man, somewhat boyish, filled with energy and an excellent human being and speaker. He was a man who loved to speak and years of being in the profession of teaching had made him a brilliant speaker. He could touch the audiences and deep within him a deep feeling for life moved him and that undercurrent burst out whenever he spoke.
He now stood before the teachers. His perceptive eyes moved across the audience and he stood there for a few seconds and surveyed the teachers with an utterly professional assurance and perceptiveness.
Then he began. He started by talking about education and its real meaning but he did not talk abstractly but in real terms as his class room experiences. He took examples from the syllabus and explained carefully, painstakingly and passionately how really a subject needs to be presented, he talked about the limitless potential of children, he explained how categorization of children into dull and bright was an error and he finally concluded that there can be a dull teacher but never a dull child because of the golden age of the child.
Because he gave practical examples, spoke in simple terms and with deep, utter conviction, he captivated the audience and all felt inspired and excited and he deeply touched them.
But the whole speech had an earthshaking impact on Manjunath. He had never in his life or even in his dreams ever thought that such people were real and such words could be spoken. Being wiser and deeper than the other teachers he did not take the new principal for granted. He was struck by wonder and he was suddenly released from bondage within. He felt at that moment that all his problems had ended!
The other teachers could grasp only the logic presented by the principal but for Mahesh it was more, much more. He saw a whole vision in that instant and as the teachers began leaving after the principal left, he rushed out. He could not see the Principal anywhere. He walked down from the second floor and he could see the principal walking towards the gate. He ran. He reached the principal just when he had reached his car. He wished the principal.
Narasimha smiled and he looked at this lonely soul and Manjunath felt in that glance that all had been seen by those deep, mysterious and perceptive eyes.
Hello sir.... he stammered - Thank you very much for being our principal.
Narasimha answered- Good. We will work together and if you have any doubts, please remember, I am always there. We will learn and we will teach. Let us have real fun, what do you say?
Yes! Yes! Thank you sir...
Then Manjunath became silent and he looked down. Narasimha felt that this young boy was a very beautiful and honest person and he needed help. It was a flash of insight and he understood that this boy was a rare and honest soul caught up by mediocrity, loneliness and extreme limitations of knowledge.
He touched Manjunath on the shoulder and said- Thank you. I will need you. I am usually alone and you must give me company.
He had never thought that such words could make someone so happy. He saw the lit up and delighted face of Manjunath.
Narasimha said - Come on, go on, we will meet tomorrow and we will begin a new day and a new life.
Those were the exact, full words and Manjunath’s soul was now cleared, lit, as if on fire and a deep joy filled him and he knew he had found the courage and knowledge to live a life.
With deep, controlled emotion, Manjunath said - Thank you.
Narasimha inclined his head in acceptance, and the bond was sealed. He got into his car and drove off. Manunath looked on until it was out of sight. He walked on towards his room, a changed man.
A life was saved.

Good, useful stuff. A young man has to go through cynicism. Makes sense.
