don't know much about such books boosting the "confidence level". But just in case, you can try Ask the Dust by John Fante. Just google it for infos.

Exercise will give you more confidence than reading - unless it is a desire to hold your own in conversations about authors and books. But according to some uni prof or other he got along for years just blagging. And honestly only masochists (Really?) plough through Finnegan's tigh-aire
