I read a quote once from an author (almost certainly twentieth century judging purely by its stance towards the Self and our knowledge thereof, and I believe he was a playwright though I am not nearly certain of that) that went something like "we do not know to what extent we really feel or merely play at feeling." That is not an exact quote by any means, but the quote expressed some sentiment or idea similar to this. I would desperately like to know what the actual quote is, the name of the author who said it, and what he is generally famous for/where the quote appears in his writings. I have done Google searches on many different variations of my (probably crude) paraphrase but I can not seem to find the source anywhere. Please help! My inability to find this quote is driving me insane. It almost feels like I just imagined the whole damn thing, but I *KNOW* that I didn't. That quote is definitely out there somewhere.
