The following lines were on the Simpsons cartoon show:
Boss: No listening. You hear me?
Homer: Uh.... no?
Boss: You just don't learn, do you? [whips Homer]
However, I vaguely recall this joke comes from literature, I think a novel. The words might be slightly different e.g., "don't listen, you understand?" or something of that sort, but the joke is the same. I also think the literary passage was about slaves, though I'm not 100% sure.
Would any of you happen to know what novel the joke came from originally?
