I had never been a good cricketer since my childhood. I used to play but it was one of my dull hobbies. I was not a skillful batsman but my bowling was more or less good. But as an eleven year old boy I was much interested in captaincy. I always wanted to be the captain of my team and for that I had always struggled. In our days one who had the majority of supporters in his team was chosen as captain. For two weeks I lead my team as a captain. Since I had some close relatives in the team that was why I also got a chance of becoming a captain for some weeks. But there were some boys who would always oppose me and wanted my resignation as a captain. They were backed up by my close rival who himself wanted to be the captain. The astonishing thing was that no match was won by our team during my tenure. But the fault lied in the players as well. They were neither able batsmen nor able blowers. They had no match winning mettle and my opposite players would always blame me. They would hold me responsible for all this. My failure became their excuse to hatch a conspiracy against me and the chief conspirator was my close rival who wanted my expulsion from captaincy. He himself wanted to be the captain at any cost. I was aware of his evil designs against me and there was no option for me except for making him the vice captain of the team. Internally I was very afraid of him, because he was an expert conspirator. I never wanted to quit from captaincy as it was very dear to me.
But my rival was badly after me. He would always criticize my inability as a captain. He was trying to bring me down in the eyes of players. But I had complete faith in my players and was always sanguine of their support. There were some black sheep among the white ones who would support my rival but they were in minority. My supporters many times suggested me to expel him from the team but that was not in my hands.
At last the unfortunate day came when he succeeded in instigating the other players who were even my close relatives. He bribed them. All the players turned against me. Even my relatives and some best friends deserted me. I had trusted them and they betrayed me. Money has power and it corrupts even the deity men. Friends are friends when your pocket is full and relatives are relatives when you are prosperous. They love you when you are rich and dislike you when you are poor. In that case poverty is curse and that is why no one wants to be poor and wants to earn money by hook or by crook. Friends are deserted for the sake of money and even brothers are killed for this money. Money has power and it can’t be denied.
The whole team demanded new captain. ‘Yes there must be voting for the election of a new captain, everyone wants it’, said my rival while winking his eye at his friends. I was sure of my defeat because I knew all my supporters were corrupted. But after all I had not left my hope. There were some players who made false promises to me and assured me that they will make me win. I had also some faith in my relatives that they will not vote against me though they were paid for that. I was hopeful but also doubtful. The day came when the new election was held for the selection of a new captain. My rival looked confident and arrogant. He kept himself aloof from me and did not talk to me. I was in dilemma not so sure as my rival. The voting was held on a bridge situated on the Badshah stream. Everyone voted against me and my close friend and relatives really beguiled and hurt me. My rival won and was elected as a new captain. Every one gazed at me to see my reaction as I lied aloof from them. They laughed at me scornfully. I thought that no one is trustworthy; friends can’t be trusted always and everywhere. Everyone is selfish and money has power. The tears started to gush out from my eyes. My friends proved themselves to be weak slaves of money. I tried to control my emotions but could not. I had a bat in my hand which I forcefully dashed against the earth. Everyone laughed at me. They were celebrating the victory of my rival and were also laughing at my tears.
