Specifically I would like to hear others opinions of what the meaning or key ideas of the lines below, and how they are critically significant to the poem as a whole.
Then the young hero made ready—that was God almighty—
Strong and resolute; he ascended on the high gallows,
Brave in the sigh of many,

The young hero is Christ who was shown in very interesting way, warlike (germanic tradition).

Another word for a, "key idea," is, "crux," which literally means, "cross," in Latin. The image of Christ, a noble hero, mounting the platform to be put on the cross is also the climax and crux of mankind's religious history itself. If he hadn't braved the stairs to bear the crux of the poem, bear the cross for our sins, and to bear the cross itself, then we'd all be doomed to sin for eternity. Feel free to copy pasta that in your essay, if your professor doesn't know what a Google search can do. And as a side note: This is all analysis, if someone takes offense because they don't subscribe to Christianity, I'm not trying to assert any views whatsoever.
