Hi,

I am an English > Tamil poetry translator, and originally a writer. I am translating now the Sonnets from the Portuguese by E B Browning. In some places I encountered both linguistic and cultural challenges. I request if any one of you can help me.

For example, in the Sonnet 3,

Can some one re-phrase the following text into modern English. Particularly I have problems in the lines underlined:

Thou, bethink thee, art
A guest for queens to social pageantries,
With gages from a hundred brighter eyes
Than tears even can make mine, to play thy part
Of chief musician.

thanks

Something as a duel between 100 brighter eyes and the tears her eyes made, i guess.

Gages = pledges (or challenges)

My interpretation -

pledges (or challenges) from a hundred eyes that are brighter than mine, even when mine are bright with tears.
