For there are wicked tongues that ruin a great reputation more easily by a witty sneer than by a direct accusation. It is easy to get into bad repute, because it is easy to believe evil of any one: it is not easy to clear yourself. The wise accordingly avoid these mischances, guarding against vulgar scandal with sedulous vigilance. This is solved by realizing that there is a game of malice of which one must be careful not to be a victim. No person is exempt from a little con-fusion here and there in travelling through the existential and circumstantial aspects of life.
