I really liked Romeo and Juliet when we read it for English, but I didn't understand what was going on. I mean, I understood the language and everything, but I didn't know what the characters did during the play, like the action an stuff. Then, in our school's writing/lit club, we actually acted out the play. It was a lot of fun, and it helped me understand what was happening. I got to play the part of Mercutio, and that was kinda hard, especially trying to memorize MOST of the lines...I never did actually completely memorize the Queen Mab speech. My older brother played the part of Benvolio, and of Escalus. That was fun. During the parts that I wasn't acting, I was able to watch and figure out what happened. The person who was doing the directing was really good, and she helped us a lot, especially with where to go during each part and helping us understand how the character would look/feel/talk in each scene.

My advice: if you don't understand Shakespeare, then try acting it out with a few of your friends. It doesn't have to be anything great and everything, but it's a lot of fun ,even if you just read it out loud, each person doing a different character. Or, you can just rent the movie. Perhaps a good choice is to go see real Shakespearean actors perform the play.
