What does this poem mean?
It was a night of early spring,
The winter-sleep was scarcely broken;
Around us shadows and the wind
Listened for what was never spoken.
Though half a score of years are gone,
Spring comes as sharply now as then--
But if we had it all to do
It would be done the same again.
It was a spring that never came;
But we have lived enough to know
That what we never have, remains;
It is the things we have that go.

It's your assignment, isn't it? What does the poem say to you?

It surely seems so , since our new member (Arianna_1225578 ) was so desperate for the definition that he/she also asked it somewhere else on the web.

It simply means that we are marching unavoidably toward having nothing. It is a possibility in the end. But until then, it is a fact of life.

It is also my school assignment. In fact, this very day I have just presented my interpretation in front of the class, but my lecturer did not give any feedback, so I don't know if I interpret it the right way or not. Is interpreting a poem as simple as "what does the poem say to you?" like Calidore said?

If the lecturer said nothing, then you probably did well, but it may not be what the lecturer was expecting.
