You must focus on what's fundamental to music, independent of the kind of music you wish to sing. You must learn clarity of pitch, your natural range, the execution of scales whatever they might be. This takes a lot of practice and some good control. But the control must not be forced, but rather within the limits of your natural makeup. You must learn the meaning of tempo, metronomics, so that you are accurate in terms of measures. All of this fundamentals will prepare you for harmony in more advanced studies, where you must be able to identify each line, by listening to it and writing it down on paper. Whether you sing or play an instrument, those are the fundamentals of music that are independent of whatever music you like.
This was a very good question, seldom asked on LitNet in spite of the fact that people are fans of this or that. Hope some experts can give you more clues as to how to become the good musician of your dreams. Find experts and associate with them as much as you can. God be with you.
