We’d stroll on the deck after dinner, dressed in our pea coats buttoned up to the top, stop in the shadow between two spirit lamps and talk, steam escaping with every warm breath. The stars were like diamonds sewn on the black canopies of Tamerlane’s tents. The Atlantic tried to reflect them, but its clumsy waves broke them into a thousand pieces of lesser carats.

I'm just experimenting here, and found this picture. It looks like it's gonna be real big!

You can't have pieces of lesser carats. A carat is a unit of mass equalling 200mg. Great picture and a nice idea, but be careful how you choose your similes and metaphors.

So if I have a diamond of say 10 carats, and it shatters, I don't get little diamonds of say 1 or 2 carats? Maybe I should have said lesser value. Or lesser carats compared to total weight. LOL but that's not quiet so poetic! I'll have to call DeBeers about this!
