In the house of Fortune, if you enter by the gate of pleasure you must leave by that of sorrow and vice versā. You ought therefore to think of the finish, and attach more importance to a graceful exit than to applause on entrance.

He harped a lot on the gambling subject. The house of Fortune has been a main subject of his wisdom. He has said that you must exit gracefully on a bad luck streak as well as on a good luck one. Probably Dostoevski grasped his meaning as a gambler. There is no doubt that Balthasar spoke from experience in this regard.
