Looking for a literary work I read in college.

Hello Everyone, I'm trying to find the name of the work and the author of one of my college reading. I remember a guy had a sick wife who was bed ridden upstairs. The guy was so engrossed in his work that he would not go see his wife for long periods of time. When his wife died he found where she had written. "I wonder if he will come up to see me today. Oh how I long to hear his footsteps on the stairs". Upon finding what she had written he goes mad with grief.
