Hello,
I have been trying to find a particular short story that I read many years ago. I cannot recall the title, however it is (was) a popular story. If anyone can provide me with a title I would appreciate it.

I don't know for sure, but I believe the book is from the 40s or 50s. It is an American author. The book's title is in the form of "The Incredible Life of Mr. XXX", or "The Amazing Life of Mr. XXXX", or something similar. It's the XXX part that I cannot recall. I do remember that the man's name was unusual.

Here's the story as I remember it .... A very average man works as a clerk. His job is mostly typing and writing. He is bored with his work. During the course of his work the sounds of his environment inspire him to day dream. He hears the sounds of his typewriter (clackety clack) and imagines he is working on the engine of a military submarine. He clicks his fountain pen and that results in a day dream about his being a heart surgeon wherein his pen is used to save someone's life. In all of his day dreams he is a hero / saves the day.

Anyway, I may not have the story line fully accurate, but that is the theme. It's a very good story that I read in high school and again in college.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Andy
