There's a weird alcove in North Van that people are always leaving random junk in (sleeping bags, potted plants, bicycles, car parts). Every day there's new stuff in there, I ate lunch across the street one day so I could watch it but didn't discover anything. I think it's some kind of homeless people's leave-a-random-thing, take-a-random-thing place. Anyway, this is it (although they cropped out the junk):

I love graffiti. The artists puts their "freedom" in jeopardy to show their work. There is nothing about that that isn't beautiful.

However, I can't stand when some jerk comes and scribbles their gang name over a piece that someone put thought and effort into. That bites my tail.

However, I can't stand when some jerk comes and scribbles their gang name over a piece that someone put thought and effort into. That bites my tail.

You love the idea of vandalism... except when someone vandalizes something that you consider of value? Makes sense to me.

Vandalism is a subjective term. I don't see any sort of graffiti as vandalism, if there is anything of the such involved it is the wall that is vandalizing the earth.

But I surely appreciate the time, effort and thought that gos along with the level of risk associated with a detailed piece, as apposed to thug scribbling.

I usually hate boxcar graffiti because those stupid letters (http://static.flickr.com/48/135490654_8d2dd7e965_o.jpg) all look the same to me, the unoriginality and unreadability gives me a headache. I like the occasional one though, I once saw a whacky aborted fetus in a bottle that stuck with me.

There's a pub in Oxford, the Turf Tavern (you may have seen it in 'Morse') that used to encourage graffiti - but only in the loos. The doors were painted white on the inside and people were, if not exactly encourage then not actively discouraged from adding to the 'decor'. It read like a multi-author novel or an extended game of Consequences as each line built on whatever had been written before. The quality of the storyline varied - I suppose it depended on the imagination of that year's undergraduates. My escort would always smile knowingly when I came out grinning then he'd get me to recount what I'd read - he used to say the quality of writing in the Ladies was higher than that in the Gents.....Don't know if the present Landlord keeps up the tradition, hope he does, I'd like to think of careers as 'proper' writers that got off to a good start there.
