This play has always been considered one of Shakepeares poorest effort..and rightly so. The play is completely absurd in most respects and has extremely poor chracter development. The only character with any real substance is Aaron, who by the way has the best lines. Titus' motives are never really clear for the resultant bloodbath. It may seem reasonable that he would kill Demetrius and Chiron since they raped Lavinia. But, really, why did he murder Tamora and Saturninus? The play is a gratuitous bloodbath: Quentin Tarantino meets Vaudeville. So, the qusetion I'm working on is "How is Titus a compassionate man?" and where, in the play, does he actually demonstrate compassion? This is not an easy question, since the WORD compassion only appears once in the entire play. Got any ideas?
