are there many?any?
I am looking for expressions that do exactly what they say on the tin. :)
An example of what I mean:
''a wheeler dealer'' is someone who wheels in goods by means of a wheel ie a car or a cart to load in the goods and then deals in them. To deal as in the get a bargain.
''to put a lid on something'' may just about fully fledge but then a lid is not always needed to finish something.
But then the expression:
''whistle blower'' is someone who ''grasses on someone' else . Iit is not fully flegged because the words do not describe the action. ie there is no whistle to be blown but only whispering telling on someone's back. ''To stab someone back'' or ''to go behind someone's back'' and ''kiss and tell'' come to mind. They are not entirely fully flegged apart from maybe ''the kiss and tell''
These metaphorical and therefore serve a visual purpose rather then a tongue and cheek one. Or is it both? I am do not know.
What is the reason to speak in metaphorics in day to day speech?
