I wrote this for a contest that will be finalized next week in my undergraduate English class. The winner gets a complete refund on the English course, and since I am tight on funds winning this would be a BIG help. Topic: Write a poem about Optimism. Although I have written hundreds of poems and have read thousands more, I am not sure of the literary command of my peers. I said it a while ago on these forums that I am a biology major, mathematics minor leaning more towards biomedical engineering, and math is my forte although I tend to do well in English too. Worse than not winning would be making myself a laughing stock of the class if my poetry is to 'sermony'. The teacher said I am allowed to get feedback from others but that they CANNOT edit my poem. Only make suggestions. Thanks.
Is Optimism the Light Day Brings?
by Mark Woyen'tarila Zikiye (Adolescent09)
I
Student: "If absolute is never reached
Then none have met Sublimity,
What is this the pastor preached,
Equating God to Infinity?"
Mentor: "Infinity and God,
Crafts from the hand of Optimism,
He, the inventor of all light,
He the panacea of all plight,
He made day from the stuff of night"
II
Student: "Is Optimism,
the light day brings?"
Mentor: "The simple four syllables,
Form a 'four' worded query,
Imply a will to conceive,
A tomorrow less dreary,
A guard of life in seas of sin,
A foe of deceivers,
The soul of believers,
The anathema of Satan's kin,
Author of uplifting plays,
It turns the bend of sunless days,
It may be trite but it is bright,
It is a peak of great height,
It is the tune Future sings
So what say you of it if not,
"the light day brings?"
