Shadows Can

Shadows can
dart and zoom
across the floor,
the shuddering branches
spilling water
holding light.

I could say
what animals
give sound
and what give

silence. And then a faint
monologue of stars
flowing open-handed
above the wind
clutched at from below
by loss and indignity

gives it away.
